The Permission to Slow Down

The Permission to Slow Down

October asks us to notice a change in pace. The air cools, the days shorten, and nature begins to show us that letting go can be beautiful. Yet many of us respond to this seasonal shift by doing more. We add events to the calendar, race toward year-end goals, and convince ourselves that slowing down must wait.

As a nurse, I spent years moving at the speed of urgency. There was always another task, another patient, another person who needed something. Even after leaving bedside nursing, I had to learn that rest is not what happens after everything is done. Rest is part of how we remain well enough to live our lives.

Slowing down does not require abandoning responsibility. It means making choices that honor your capacity.

This week, notice where you may be rushing out of habit. Maybe you are eating while standing at the counter. Maybe you are moving from one commitment to the next without a breath between them. Maybe your mind is already living in tomorrow before today has ended.

Try creating one small pause each day. It may be five quiet minutes in the morning, a walk outside after work, or a few moments at night with a candle lit nearby. Let the soft glow remind you that you do not have to move at the pace of everything around you.

Ask yourself: What would become possible if I gave myself permission to slow down?

Gentle ritual suggestion: Light an Aurum Garland candle at the end of the day as a simple signal that you are stepping out of urgency and into rest. Aurum Garland’s handcrafted candles are designed to support intentional moments of comfort and reflection.
