Saying Yes to Simple Joy

Saying Yes to Simple Joy

By August, schedules can feel packed and responsibilities steady, but summer still offers small invitations to joy. The sound of cicadas in the evening. The taste of something cold on a hot day. The way light filters through leaves at sunset.

After years of witnessing how quickly life can change, I do not take these moments for granted. Joy, especially simple joy, is not a luxury item for when everything else is done. It is nourishment for the parts of us that have grown tired from constant seriousness.

Saying yes to simple joy might look like:

  • Letting yourself fully enjoy a favorite snack without multitasking
  • Sitting outside for ten minutes just to feel the air on your skin
  • Laughing wholeheartedly at a show or a story
  • Remembering a happy memory and allowing yourself to smile about it

If you feel guilt or resistance, you are not alone. Many of us have internalized the idea that joy must be earned, or that we should not feel it when others are struggling. The truth is, joy can coexist with pain. It does not cancel out empathy; it sustains it.

This week, notice one small thing that brings you joy and consciously say yes to it. Let yourself linger there for a moment longer than you usually would.

Ask yourself:

What simple joy is already available to me today, and will I allow myself to receive it?

You do not need permission from anyone else. Your heart is allowed to feel light, even while it holds many things at once.
