Listening for What You Need

Listening for What You Need

We often become experts at noticing what everyone else needs. A colleague needs support. A family member needs our attention. A friend needs someone to listen. For those of us who are natural caregivers, tuning into others can become second nature.

The harder question is often this: What do I need?

After leaving bedside nursing because of burnout, I had to learn how to hear myself again. Burnout did not arrive all at once. It came through small signals I had learned to ignore: exhaustion, irritability, dread, and the feeling that I had nothing left to give.

Our bodies and hearts are always communicating with us. The invitation is to listen before we reach the point of depletion.

This week, pause at least once each day and ask yourself:

  • What am I feeling right now?
  • What does my body need?
  • What is one kind thing I can offer myself today?

The answer may be rest. It may be a nourishing meal, a walk, a conversation, or a boundary. It may simply be permission to stop pretending you are fine when you are carrying more than usual.

Self-awareness is not self-indulgence. It is the beginning of self-respect.

Gentle ritual suggestion: Keep a bar of your favorite Aurum Garland soap by the sink as a reminder to pause during the day. Even a few seconds of warm water, scent, and intentional breathing can become a small check-in with yourself. Aurum Garland soaps are handcrafted with natural ingredients and are part of the brand’s nurse-founded approach to intentional self-care.
